Minutes – Monthly - Membership Meeting
Elks Lodge
Napa, CA
President Mathisen called the August 26, 2005 meeting to order at 0935 hours at the Elks Lodge in Napa.
Past President Larry Monette (1999 – Santa Clara) lead the pledge of allegiance and Past President, Jim McLaughlin (1982 – Palo Alto) was appointed Sergeant of Arms,
President Mathisen introduced host Fire Marshals Darren Drake and Kate Dargan, who introduced County Fire Chief Ernie Loveless to welcome the group.
The organization recognized the visiting Fire Chiefs, Building Officials, and Past Presidents.
Self-introductions were made. President Mathisen asked Past President Steve Hart to declare a quorum.
A motion was made to approve the July minutes by President Mathisen. Motion carried.
Sadly, Nor Cal member and Factory Mutual representative Roger Benson passed away. In his honor a moment of silence was conducted.
Northern Past President, Robert Kinney (1989 – Vallejo FD) has been hospitalized.
Southern Past President and CFPI workshop committee member, Ted Wackerman (1989 – Oceanside FD) is undergoing cancer treatment.
Nor Cal FPO Secretary, Teresa Johnson’s surgery went well and she is recuperating at home.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to our friends and colleagues. We wish you all a speedy recovery.
President Mathisen thanked Leina Morris of the Vallejo Fire Dept. for her outstanding service to the Public Education committee. He then announced Sandy Wargo of the Novato Fire Protection District as the new Pub Ed co-chair.
State Fire Marshal Report was given by Dan Najara. Dan mentioned the new format of the newsletter and provided an update on the code adoption process. He discussed the Core Groups and 14 working groups who will conduct code analysis and provide recommendations to the Building Standards Committee. The Core Group will have a kick-off meeting on September 6, 2005 in Sacramento. Dan indicated that so far the participation on the working groups is light and reiterated the importance of the FPO’s participation in the process.
Legislative Report
No report, co-chairs not present.
EXCAHNGE OF IDEAS
Rick Terry (San Ramon Valley FPD) spoke on the issue of ICC certifications. He also mentioned California Fire Prevention Institute early bird registration is available.
Sam Husoe, "Gentleman from the South", provided information on the upcoming CFPI workshop and NFSA seminars being hosted in Modesto.
Danielle Stefani (Livermore/Pleasanton FD) announced a November 17th class on Classification of Hazardous Materials. More information on class location is forthcoming.
Kate Dargan (CDF/Napa County FD) and Jim Hunt (Hunt Research Corporation) will be teaching a class on November 9th for Planners as it relates to the Wildland Urban Interface. More information will be available on the UC Davis Website.

PROGRAM
Jerry Davies, Director of Communications for the Personal Insurance Federation of California gave an informative presentation on the California Insurance Industry. Jerry serves on the board for the Alliance for a FireSafe California and is director of the Board of the FireSafe Council of California.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
President Mathisen gave a report of Executive-board items discussed. The Co-chairs provided a summary of Committee activities.
Napa Fire conducted the raffle.
The meeting was adjourned at 1400 hours.
