Minutes - Monthly Membership Meeting

President Mike Stewart called the July meeting to order at 0942 hours at the USA World Classics Auto Museum in Vallejo, CA.

Steve Hart conducted the pledge of allegiance and Rick Rodewald was appointed the Sergeant at Arms.

President Stewart introduced Assistant Chief, Ray Dandridge, who welcomed the group to Vallejo, California. He thanked those who help set up the meeting, thanked the caterers and then introduced his staff.

Visiting Fire Chiefs and Building Officials and Past Presidents were recognized.

Self-introductions were made. At this time, Sam Husoe, Past President declared a quorum.


 President Stewart introduced Cal Chiefs President Bill McCammon. Chief McCammon spoke about the code selection process and also about the relationship between the FPO Sections and Cal Chiefs. He discussed in detail the reasons why Cal Chiefs and Cal Metro Chiefs decided on the NFPA codes versus the ICC codes. A general membership discussion occurred with members voicing their concerns and viewpoints about the code selection process.

President Stewart spoke about the two California Building Standards Commission meetings he attended on July 2nd and July 16th and asked for support of the membership to attend and testify in favor of the ICC codes at the July 29th CSBC meeting. He also mentioned the FPO’s opposition to SB1361 which dealt with delayed egress devices in adult day care facilities.


State Fire Marshal Report –Hugh Council mentioned that the next CSBC meeting will occur on July 29th at the Water Resources Building in Sacramento at 10:00 a.m. and he stated to read the attached monthly report for further details on the California State Fire Marshal’s activities.


 Legislative Report – Gene Gantt presented this month’s legislative report. See the attached report for more details.


Exchange of ideas:

Fire Chief Ruben Grijalva – Recognized and thanked all of the Nor Cal FPO members and President Stewart for their involvement and input into the code selection process. He sent out a petition to Cal Chiefs asking them to reverse their decision. He also sent Cal Chiefs a resolution asking them to change the by-laws of their association to include the membership in voting on important issues. See the attached copies of the petition and resolution.

Kent Miller – Stated that the Ammonia class to be held in Stockton in August is full and if there is enough interest a second class may be scheduled. Please contact Kent Miller if you are interested in another class on Ammonia.

Wes Arvin – Asked if members are not receiving emails to contact him in order to update their email addresses.

John Fitch – Mentioned that the City of Vacaville has an opening for the position of "Fire Prevention Specialist" that will have a final filing date of August 11, 2003.

Roger Sprehn – Of the Corte Madera Fire Department will be offering a 5 day class "Fire Management 2D Master Planning" in San Rafael. See the attached flyer for details and dates.

Lucky Thomas – Spoke about "The Firewise Communities Workshop" scheduled for October 15-16 at the San Ramon Valley Conference Center, which provides a great opportunity to increase wildland fire safety awareness in our communities. See the attached letter to Nor Cal FPO’s and press release. Lucky also mentioned that inspectors are needed to conduct fire inspections for fraternities on the Berkeley campus and to contact him if you are interested.

Steve Hart – Donated a new book for the raffle.

Sam Husoe – Announced two Fire Sprinkler Seminars in September in Carlsbad and San LuisObispo. See announcement and registration in the minutes.

Fort Hartsfield – Mentioned that the 3 checklists for fire alarm, sprinkler, and standpipe systems are on the website as well as the Title 19/NFPA 25 comparison matrix.

President Stewart – Stated that the next meeting in Petaluma will be the Hawaiian shirt meeting and those members not wearing a Hawaiian shirt will be fined a dollar.

Meeting was adjourned to Committees and Executive Board meeting at 11:01 a.m..
