Minutes – Monthly Membership Meeting

San Francisco, CA


President Giuliani called the May 19, 2006 meeting to order at 0945 hours.

Past President Mike Stewart conducted the pledge of allegiance and Captain Tom Harvey was appointed Sergeant of Arms.

President Giuliani introduced Captain Tom Harvey from San Francisco Fire, who welcomed the group. He then introduced his Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White who welcomed everyone to lovely San Francisco. Chief Hayes-White also introduced the new San Francisco Fire Marshal, Barbara Schultheis. Congratulations to Fire Marshal Schultheis!

The organization recognized the visiting Fire Chiefs, Building Officials and guests.

President Giuliani asked Past President Forrest Craig to declare a quorum, so declared. Self-introductions were made.

The April minutes will be mailed as one document with the May meeting minutes. They will both be approved at the June meeting in Fairfield.

Special Presentations

2006/07 proposed budget including two new items:

  1. Marketing Plan. Implementation of our Marketing, Communication and Branding Plan provided by Balzac Communications and Marketing Consultants which will include: a member survey, a media kit and a "Word of Mouth" recruitment kit.
  2. Strategic Plan Update – We have retained the firm of PattersonWheeler, LLC to provide financial and administrative services management, aid in coordinating education and training and other services as requested.

State Fire Marshal Report

Steve Hart advised that the monographs are now on the SFM website. They are being reviewed for accuracy by the SFM staff prior to final submittal to CBSC. Refer often to both the SFM and CBSC websites for the must current status of the code process. Chief Grijalva is Acting State Fire Marshal until an appointment is made to fill the now vacant State Fire Marshal position.

Legislative Report

Gene Gantt was unavailable to attend this month’s meeting. The legislative report will be in the minutes.

Exchange of Ideas

Gale Bate is looking for information about vent openings in Wildland Urban Interface areas – specifically the intumescent products.

Fort Hartsfield advised that as outgoing Marketing Director he would like to see record sales for his last meeting today – he is even willing to donate his (non-existent) commission back to the association! Pat Stranahan with S.F.F.D. will be taking over the Marketing Director position as of next month’s meeting.

Vice President Darren Drake thanks Fort for his excellent work on the website. Darren also advised that Fort has provided statistics on website usage. Our website (www.firepreventionofficers.org) is now receiving approximately 5,800 hits daily, almost 70,000 hits per month. This is an excellent venue for exchange of ideas, professional information and advertising!

Ethan Foote advised there would be a WUI training conference in June in Napa hosted by Napa Fire Department. See minutes for announcement.

Pat Chew advised there would be an OSHPD III inspection class held on 6/20/06 in Davis. See minutes for announcement.

No committee meetings today due to two presentations.

PROGRAMS

10:30 a.m. – Seismic Bracing for Sprinkler Systems and Fire Pump Hydraulic Calculations.

1:00 p.m. – Introduction to Performance Based Atrium Smoke Control System Design using Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS)

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

President Giuliani gave a report of E-board items discussed.

San Francisco Fire conducted the raffle.

The meeting was adjourned at 1430 hours. Next meeting will be at Fairfield on June 23, 2006.
