Minutes - Monthly Membership Meeting
Roseville, CA
Del Webb/Sun City Roseville


President Stewart called the October meeting to order at 0931 hours at the Timber Creek Lodge in Roseville, CA.

Darrell Harguth conducted the pledge of allegiance and Tom Dodaro was appointed the Sergeant at Arms.

President Stewart introduced Fire Marshal, Dennis Mathisen. Fire Marshal Mathisen welcomed the group to Roseville, California and thanked the Sun City staff for their assistance with the Roseville meeting. He introduced his staff and his Fire Chief, Ken Wagner.

Fire Chief Wagner also welcomed the group to Roseville and thanked the Nor Cal FPO’s for their hard work in reviewing the new codes and for facing all of the challenges the new codes have brought to the table. Chief Wagner then introduced the Mayor of Roseville, Rocky Rockholm who welcomed the group to Roseville.

Visiting Fire Chiefs, Building Officials and Past Presidents were recognized.

Self-introductions were made. At this time, Rick Terry, Past President declared a quorum.


President Stewart appointed the Nominations Committee for the selection of the future Nor Cal Board member. The committee is composed of Past Presidents Forrest Craig, Rick Terry, and Danielle Stefani. President Stewart also asked for written nominations for the Charles H. Gray Award and mentioned that there are Charles H. Gray grants/scholarships available.

Paul Inouye of the Milpitas Fire Department was appointed as the new Hazardous Materials Committee Co-Chair.

President Stewart requested that the committee co-chairs give their annual reports to the Executive Board to be included in the Annual Report to the Chiefs.

A resolution was presented to Pam Cabezas, by President Stewart, that recognized her retirement from the Roseville Fire Department. We thank and pay tribute to Pam for her years of dedicated service in public education and in fire prevention. Congratulations Pam!

President Stewart gave a code update. The subcommittee met with Cal Chiefs/Cal Metro Chiefs and discussed the issues that need to be addressed at the State Level and with NFPA. Nor Cal FPO’s will work with the State for the next code update. At the next meeting in Burlingame a presentation on the Code Adoption process will occur.


State Fire Marshal Report – Dan Najera presented the State Fire Marshal report. See the attached report for more details and it is also available on the SFM and Nor Cal FPO’s websites.


Legislative Report – None given.


Exchange of ideas:

Darrell Harguth – Mentioned in Southern California there are fire extinguishing companies that are not servicing fire extinguishers properly. A memo is being sent out for clarification of the new regulations.

Kent Miller – Asked if any jurisdictions had experience with placing emergency generators with diesel fuel tanks greater than 250 gallons in size on highrise buildings. Kent also asked which NFPA committees should Nor Cal committee members join.

Bill Greene – Mentioned that the Statutes and Regulations course is still being offered and the next one is in Apple Valley on November 4,5, and 6. If you would like to have a class in your area contact the State Fire Marshal’s office.

President Stewart reminded everyone to sign up for the 14th Annual Fire Prevention Workshop at the Rancho Santa Barbara held on March 15-19, 2004. He also mentioned that Nor Cal shirts, pins, coffee mugs etc. are for sale with Fort Hartsfield.

Meeting was adjourned to Committees and Executive Board meeting at 1022 hours.

The next meeting which will be a week earlier than usual will take place in Burlingame on November 21st, 2003.
