Minutes - Monthly Membership Meeting

Napa Elks Lodge


President Danielle Stefani called the September meeting to order at 0930 hours at the Napa Elks Lodge.

Fort Hartsfield, Committee for Fire Safe Dwellings, Webmaster, led the pledge of allegiance.

George Devendorf, City of San Bruno, was appointed Sergeant at Arms.

President Stefani introduced Host Fire Marshal Dave Mello. Dave welcomed the group to the annual Nor-Cal wine auction and introduced Napa Fire Chief Joe Perry. Chief Perry welcomed the group to Napa and emphasized his passion for fire prevention. He did state he is recognizing fewer and fewer members "of his age group". Dave then introduced the staff that assisted with putting the meeting together: Dee Wong, Plans Reviewer; Chris Oswald, Administrative Assistant; and Sandy Wargo, Public Education Specialist.

President Stefani recognized Liaison Chief Doug Williams, and Steve Jensen, Chief Building Official Marin County and Matt Tarr, Building Official City of Selma, and Gary Bruin, Building Official City of Napa.

Self-introductions were made. At this time Rick Terry, Past President, San Ramon FPD, Past President/Judge Advocate, declared a quorum.

A motion was made, and seconded, to approve the August 2001 minutes.


Exchange of ideas:

Steve Hart, NFSIA – Inquired about the possibility of all members getting a copy of the So-Cal roster. Secretary Arvin said he would look into it.

Rick Terry, San Ramon Valley FPD, Judge Advocate – The FFD for the Deputy Fire Marshal position his agency is currently trying to fill is extended. It is now open till filled.

Dennis Mathisen, Roseville Fire Department, Treasurer – Announced location of next meeting and pre-registration is needed before October 19. Dennis also stated he has some sunglasses which he found following the meeting in Stockton.

Ira Schumer, Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute – Mentioned new code language on firestopping which will go into the Plumbing Code.

Ron Keefer, Menlo Park FD – Commented on UPS systems for lead acid batteries. See Haz Mat Committee minutes in August monthly minutes.

Dennis Mathisen, Roseville Fire Department, Treasurer – Wants information on roadway tunnels with respect to hazardous materials. Many comments on this topic.

Bill Tyler, Novato Fire Dept. – Announced the Code Adoption Workshop on November 11 in Novato.

Rick Terry, San Ramon Valley FPD, Judge Advocate – BSC is on track to adopt California Codes by 12/31/01 and then the 180 day adoption period by local agencies begins.

Bill Greene, Davis Fire Department – Wants info on Fire Dispatch training schools.


State Fire Marshal Report – Dan Najera, CDF/SFM

FFD for DSFM closes today. Part II and Part IX hearings are Nov. 28.

Legislative Report – Gene Gantt, Benicia Fire Department, see attached.


Meeting was adjourned to Committees and Executive Board meeting at 1020 hours.


Afternoon Program – Forrest Craig, Novato Fire Department, gave a presentation on the Charlie Gray scholarship money he was awarded this year. The money was used in conjunction with other funding sources to clear away a large amount of brush in an urban interface setting, utilizing resources from Novato Fire, CCC and the local community.

Each Committee Co-Chair gave a brief recap of their respective meetings. Detailed reports to be in these minutes.

Thank you Napa and all wine contributors for an excellent and well-attended meeting! Much appreciation is extended to the Napa Fire Department and all staff for making the necessary arrangements.

President Stefani adjourned the meeting at 1415 hours.
