Elevator regulation update: We have been in contact with Bruce Fraser, a member of a task group performing a risk analysis of the various scenarios involving sprinklers and elevators. This task group will provide information to the ANSI A17.1 Emergency Operations Committee, which in turn, would generate proposals for inclusion into the A17.1 standard. We will follow their progress and attempt to provide feedback relating to future proposals.

With the concurrence of the State Elevator, Ride, and Tramway Unit staff, San Mateo County has adopted a procedure whereby sprinkler piping without heads would be provided at the top of elevator hoistways and in equipment rooms. With the sprinkler heads removed, the heat detector activated power shunt would then be disabled or removed. Once the issues surrounding the power shunt are resolved, the sprinkler protection can be restored as appropriate. We will coordinate this procedure with the

Fire Code Committee and also forward to the SOCAL Equipment and Devices Committee. Our intent is to have a standardized approach to the issue.

Committee Goals: We reviewed our Committee goals for the upcoming year. There are four basic goals with a fifth waiting in the wings as we complete the others.

Mid-month meeting: A mid-month meeting will be held in Sunnyvale on May 10, 2001, to review the issues relating to maintenance and servicing of class II standpipes.

Respectfully submitted,

George Blind
