NFPA 13/72 – The committee has been approached by Leslie Haberek (OSFM) and asked to assist with a review of the 2002 editions of NFPA 13 and 72. She stated that the State Fire Marshal’s Office intends on adopting these two standards in the next code cycle. The Committee will be coordinating with CAAFA and the two OSFM advisory committees regarding this task.

Title 19/NFPA 25 – Jim Feld reported that the Title 19/NFPA 25 workgroup is nearing the end of their project. Jim has met with officials of the State Water Resources Board with regard to the issue of water discharge during routine water supply testing and flushing. The goal is to develop reasonable standardized procedures that will satisfy all parties.

Electronic Monitoring of Fire Extinguishers –Darrel Harguth presented information regarding a fire extinguishing monitoring system manufactured by MIJA, Inc. that allows fire extinguisher pressure and presence to be electronically monitored through fire alarm or security systems. MIJA has partnered with Brooks Equipment and Amerex to market monitorable extinguishers. The use of monitoring has been approved in some states to replace monthly inspections and will be evaluated by the NFPA 10 Technical Committee. More information is available at www.mija.com.

Elevator Regulations – George Blind reported on the latest developments. A workshop was held in March to review the use of elevators in fires and other emergencies. The workshop was attended by 125 industry and fire service representatives from around the world. Since the predominant view of those present was to eliminate use of sprinklers and the power shunt trip in elevator equipment rooms, there are now two new sections proposed for NFPA 5000 that will include such proposals. See the attached elevator update page or additional details.

This was George Blind’s last meeting as co-chair since he will be retiring at the end of May.

Respectfully submitted,

George Blind / Dave Dewey - Co-chairs
