Fire Protection Equipment and Devices Committee(s) Joint Meeting
Minutes of February 8, 2001

Members and guests in attendance: Bruce Lecair and George Blind, co-chairs Nor-cal. Jim Glew and Bill Hopple, co-chairs So-cal. Jim McLaughlin, Tom Bednar, Jim Dias, David Jones, Sam Husoe, Jesse Perez, Ted Wackerman, Terri Leyton, Steve Leyton, Dr. Shane M. Clary, Manny Muniz, Dennis Lockard, Steve Hart, Wayne Martin, Antoinette Gray, Dorothy Priolo, Mark Latham and John Guhl.

The meeting began at 08:00. The agenda for this shortened meeting included the following items:

The list of elevator safety issues was discussed between the members. The major issue continues to be shunt trip. Although most agreed with the proposed changes, nothing was agreed upon to forward to John Guhl. It was educational for those who haven’t heard it.

Standpipes and testing issues was a major discussion. Several members and guests spoke in support of NFPA 25 but there was no final decision of a recommendation to approach the executive boards with. Jim McLaughlin discussed some of the conflicts between NFPA 25 and Title 19. He added that resurrecting the Sprinkler Ad Hoc Committee might be a good idea at this time.

*It occurred by this time, that this meeting was one of general discussion of items, and not necessary to develop concensus on anything at this meeting.

The issue of NFPA 10/Title 19 requirements was discussed. As usual, the discussion got round to the issue of 1 year vs. 6 year teardown. Randy Sheldon (SFM) purportedly has documentation. We are looking for recommendations at this time…because nothing has happened.

FPO Education re: 2-day basic fire alarm class in Newport Beach on March 27 and 28.

NFPA 1/Uniform Fire Code Preprint document (Mr. Tom Oakes) is available via NFPA download or via Standards Admin. @ (617) 984-7249. Proposals are due at the NFPA by June 8, 2001. Contact Tom Oakes if you need any assistance or questions answered.

Dennis Lockard provided a brief overview and update on the status of the firesafeschools.com website and the project in general.

This meeting being an abbreviated one due to our educational offerings of the week, the meeting was adjoured at approximately 10:00 a.m.
