I. REVIEW OF MINUTES

There was no meeting in November and December. No minutes were reviewed.

II. OLD BUSINESS

  1. Elevators

George Blind summarized letters from the Northern and Southern Division of the Fire Prevention Officers Fire Equipment and Devices Committees to the State Fire Marshal the ANSI/ASME A-17.1 standards. The letters were written in support of elimination of the shunt trip, shielding of electrical equipment and the blinking helmet indicator. Staff at the SFM’s office will be submitting code changes to reflect our requests. Action will also be required by the staff at the Elevator Unit to eliminate the shunt trip from Title 8. Stay tuned.

  2. Class II Standpipes

A lengthy discussion was held regarding this issue. Concerns were voiced over the lack of consistency found throughout the codes with regard to Class II Standpipes. A subcommittee was formed to meet, survey the issues and to submit recommendations to the Board in order to bring resolution to this issue. Steve Hart will chair the committee.

 New Business

  1. Joint Meeting in Monterey

Bruce Lecair polled the committee for issues for the joint meeting of the Fire Equipment and Devices Committee of the North and South. The committee asked for discussions on the following:

  1. Is there a change of attitude regarding Electric verses Diesel Fire Pumps as a result of the electrical crisis in the State? What is considered "reliable" power sources?
  2. What proposals are being submitted by the South for NFPA editions to the next Code?
  1. Goals for 2001-2
  1. The committee reviewed last year’s goals and submitted goals for the upcoming year. The goals that were accomplished in 2000-1 were as follows:
  1. Develop a Mission Statement
  2. Complete a Study of the Elevator Codes.

The goals that are currently on going are as follows:

  1. Revisit the Fire Alarm Guidelines
  2. Revisit the on-site hydrant guidelines
  3. Complete a Study and make recommendation on the Class II Standpipe issue.

The new goal for 2001-2 is to study and make recommendations on eliminating T-19 and adopting NFPA 25 for service and testing of fire extinguishers and fire protection equipment. This issue will be addressed initially by several State Fire Marshal advisory committees which are being re-constituted.

Respectfully submitted
