  1. Fred Benn demonstrated the proper method for gluing a piece of CPVC pipe into a fitting without the use of an excessive amount of glue. Over the years, there has been a concern that installers would install a reducing coupling (with head installed) on a drop as the last part of the installation, thereby increasing the potential for glue to drop into the back of the head and plug it. Fred explained how his staff prepares the head and the reducing coupling on a short piece of pipe in the shop. The pipe is then cut to appropriate length in the field and glued into the system with little or no chance of glue becoming a problem. Installers should wipe excessive amount of glue from the pipe there is a slight chance that it might cause the pipe to weaken to some degree.
  2. Fred also advised that there are changes in the works for UL 1626, Standard for Residential Sprinklers, that will ultimately result in changes to NFPA standards. There are also other changes to 13D proposed that would require a waterflow switch, clarify protection of garages, and increase delivered density. We will follow the progress of these changes.
  3. Tolco has a good CD available that contains earthquake bracing calculation software designed for use by designers and plan reviewers. Contact Tolco if you would like a copy.
  4. Sam Husoe advised that NFSA is developing a new website that will be provided with information to assist local jurisdictions with high rise sprinkler ordinances.
  5. Factory Mutual has developed a CD titled "Fighting Fire in Sprinklered Buildings". It is free and only available to public fire service agencies. Contact: Jeff Mattern at FM Global 101 Lindenwood Drive Suite 200 Malvern, PA 19355
  6. At the March 22 meeting we will begin our review of the fire department handouts and web based information that has been gathered so far. We will also begin review of the CSFM Fire Alarm Systems and Inspection manual currently being updated. You can obtain a copy of this from the CSFM website main page: http://osfm.fire.ca.gov/sfmfirecagov.html.

Respectfully submitted,
