Reviewed minutes from the June meeting
No objections or corrections were heard. The minutes were approved.
ANSI/ASME Elevator Requirements
George Blind reviewed the proposed changes to the ANSI/ASME A17.1 Elevator Requirements from a meeting held with Jim Meyer, Principal Engineer – DIR/DOSH Elevator, Ride and Tramway Unit, Bill Hopple and Dennis Lockard, So. Cal FPO. G.B. discussed the proposed changes and entertained committee questions and concerns regarding the proposals. Major concerns regarding the proposals included the use of a waterflow switch in lieu of the heat detector in the machine room and awareness of the function of the helmet light on the control panel in the elevator. The next step for the Fire Equipment and Devices Committee is to obtain approval of the Board of Directors and establish a dialog with the Nor Cal Training Officers Association to provide the necessary information to inform and train members of the fire industry on the new standards.
A copy of the proposed changes is attached to these minutes. (click to view) Please forward any comments to George Blind or Bruce Lecair.
Standpipe Requirements
No committee progress, or update.
Roundtable
Robert Evans provided a newspaper clipping on dormitory fire legislation.
Jake Tomlin inquired if any jurisdictions have utilized local ordinances to eliminate fire sprinklers in elevator shafts. No members report having done so.
Terri Leyton reported that the GBR information is on the Central Sprinkler Company web site.
Mark Hollan reported concerns over the earthquake bracing standard in Volume II of the California Building Code. The new standards are more stringent than in NFPA 13.
Robert Evans report that he has a Mission Revival style building. He is experiencing challenges with the installation of new seismic bracing in older concrete. He is currently looking for engineering studies on the subject of the integrity of the fasteners and bracing.
George Blind shared photos of a "mini deluge duct fire sprinkler assembly" that he found in France. The system has a frangible bulb above the duct, which releases the check valve and allows the water to travel to the sprinkler head.
Bruce Lecair asked about a portable dust collection system that is being researched in Woodland. Committee members expressed that the system appeared to be acceptable and that the current code is not necessarily up to date with new technology.
George Blind requested information on having the control panel for an FM 200 system on the outside of the protected room.
Bill Salee mentioned that many jurisdictions are requiring exterior strobes near fire department connections to assist locating the connection.
Respectfully submitted,
Bruce Lecair,
