We reviewed the minutes from the January meeting and the minutes from the joint meeting in Monterey (attached).

Elevator update: There is no progress to report. It will still be up to the State DOSH to modify or drop the requirement for the heat detector activated shunt trip before we can get rid of it. There is a task group presently conducting a risk analysis to evaluate the shunt trip requirement included in the ASME Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators (A17.1) adopted in Title 8 by DOSH. We will endeavor to find out more about this and other proposed revisions to A17.1.

Voice evacuation systems: There are discussions underway regarding the most effective length of alert tones associated with voice systems and the use of pre-recorded or live messages. We will follow these issues.

Maintenance of life safety systems: Attendees discussed the general issue of maintenance of life safety systems (e.g. fire alarm, smoke control, etc.). Although NFPA 72 is adopted within CBC Chapter 35, there is no consistency with regard to local enforcement of the service, testing, and maintenance requirements. It was proposed that we have a one day brainstorming session to review this issue. We will set up a mid-month meeting for this topic.

Fire Alarm System Review Guide: Robert Evans passed out copies of the CSFM Fire Alarm System Plan Review Guide which dates back to 1995. The Committee will investigate the best method for reviewing and updating this document with the CSFM’s office.

Respectfully submitted,

George Blind
