CSFM Fire Alarm Systems and Inspection Procedures Manual
Attendees discussed this manual and the fact that the CSFM’s office has requested input regarding the importance of the document. The document and a survey form may be downloaded from the main CSFM website at http://osfm.fire.ca.gov/sfmfirecagov.html. This document is very informative and could serve as a good training tool for all those involved with fire alarm systems. The Equipment and Devices Committee, at present, has no plans for a review of this document; however, we may do so later. The Fire Alarm Advisory Committee is continuing their review of this document and will be trying to assess what type of documents will be best for users. We encourage you to review the document and complete the survey.
CSFM Fire Alarm Advisory Committee
Committee members continue to meet quarterly to review many significant issues. The next meeting is scheduled for April 24 at Sacramento CSFM Headquarters.
AHJ Fire Protection Equipment Handout Project
Attendees reviewed progress with identification of what handout or web-based information is available from jurisdictions. Information from thirteen jurisdictions has been identified so far. As the matrix develops, we will be exploring effective ways to make this information available through our website.
Fire Alarm System Plan Review
David Secoda reminded everyone to be careful using the strobe spacing templates distributed by equipment manufacturers. These are typically set to a 1/8" = 1 foot scale.
Elevator Update
The Task Group on Sprinklers in Elevator Machine Rooms has been meeting and will be issuing a report after a meeting on April 29. The Group is giving strong consideration to recommending that sprinklers not be provided in machine rooms. Stay tuned.
Rangehood Systems and makeup air shutdown
George clarified the requirement from NFPA 96 that only make up air that is supplied internally to a hood need be shut down when the extinguishing system discharges. According to Bill Klingenmaier, a member of the NFPA 96 Committee, integral hood make up air has a greater chance to disrupt the discharge patterns of the agent and provides more direct air supply to any fire on the cooking equipment.
Respectfully submitted
