OMEGA SPRINKLERS

FPD Committee Co-Chair Wes Arvin presented the final Omega Ad-Hoc Committee report to the Executive Board. Wes read the recommendations in the report and briefly went over the rest of the report. This led to some very good discussion. Group recommended asking the Executive Board to officially disband the Ad-Hoc Committee. Wes stated he will also recommend the Executive Board write a letter thanking the CPSC for their support.

There was some discussion regarding the brass nipple extension because the replacement glass bulb sprinkler is not the same as the Omega. Some Jurisdictions are apparently not approving the brass nipple extension as it is made of very thin metal which can crack or split very easily.

NFPA 13D Installation

Bruce Lecair from Woodland asked the group how many NFPA 13D installations can an Owner/Builder do each year. Two (2) according to the group but Jim McLaughlin said he would dig up a copy of the document which states this.

Fire Protection Goals and Objectives

Ed Saiz recommended adding a goal regarding standpipe hoses and nozzles, specifically with respect to the use of unlined linen hose. According to Ed the regulations are not clear as the regs come from Title 8, CalOSHA, Title 19 and NFPA. After much discussion, the group agreed to ask the Executive Board to form an AdHoc committee to focus on this issue.

NFPA 72 and MPS Requirement

Ed Saiz brought up how can this group influence elimination of the requirement to install one (1) MPS with each sprinkler system installation. According to John Gillilan, this requirement came into the Code in 1993. Other questions on this topic included: How about the inside audible device? Who gets the audible in multiple occupancy situations? The group agreed as a first step to contact CSFM's legislative representative and see if State will exempt this from California Code.

Elevator Regulations

Based on the "new" elevator testing requirements and "new" requirements for power shutdown prior to activation of the elevator shaft sprinkler by a heat detector, the group suggested inviting somebody from the State Elevator Department to come and speak at a mid-month meeting. Attendees agreed to send Wes Arvin a list identifying their specific items of concern.
