Title 8/CBC Elevator requirements

George Blind reported that continued efforts are underway with So-Cal FPO members to define a reasonable way to shunt elevator power at time of sprinkler waterflow. John Guhl reported that he will be convening a meeting of the CSFM Elevator Committee during November and that Nor-Cal/So-Cal committee chairs would be invited so that the issues can be resolved in time for inclusion in the next CBC. One of the issues that must be reviewed is whether or not it is really necessary to shunt elevator power and what alternatives are available other than using waterflow detection devices or heat detectors.

Wirsbo AQUAPEX Integrated Plumbing/Fire Protection System

Steve Leyton and Grant Dow provided information regarding an integrated plumbing/sprinkler system now being marketed (generally outside California) for use in one and two family dwellings. Committee members discussed the pros and cons and some of the issues that would have to be addressed as this system is marketed in California. See the attachment for more information. Grant indicated that Wirsbo will address the issues thoroughly so that this system can gain acceptance by AHJs.

Sprinkler system maintenance – Title 19 vs. NFPA 25

John Guhl and Steve Hart commented regarding the use of NFPA 25. Title 19 is the State document that addresses service and maintenance of fixed fire protection systems; therefore, NFPA 25, which is referenced by NFPA 13, is not adopted by reference by the State. Since NFPA 25 is more current and comprehensive than Title 19, an amended NFPA 25 may be the best alternative. Look for future effort in this regard.

NFPA 13, 1999 – Tentative Interim Amendment

George Blind mentioned a TIA for NFPA 13 that was effective on May 22, 2000. It effectively increases the amount of water to be discharged when calculating four heads in a NFPA 13 residential system. The four heads must now deliver a .1 gpm/sq.ft. density. Previously, only the discharge required by the UL listing was required. Some of the effective densities using those numbers were below .04 gpm/sq.ft. See attachments for details.

Central GB "O-ring" style sprinklers

Terri Leyton advised that Central Sprinkler has not released any further information regarding the alleged problems with some glass bulb sprinklers.

Class II standpipes

Consideration is being given to creating an ad-hoc committee to address issues relating to class II standpipes and hoses. If you would be willing to chair such a committee, please advise either Bruce or George.

Roundtable

Robert Evans advised that he has noted some improper designs relative to rangehood systems. Check equivalent pipe lengths carefully.

Respectfully submitted,

George Blind, Co-chair
Bruce Lecair, Co-chair
