Residential Sprinkler Listings:

No additional problems were reported relative to the listings that became effective on July 12. Tyco-Central has revised the data sheet for the LFII pendant sprinkler. The flows for sloped ceilings (max. 8 inch rise for 12 inch run) are now the same as those for horizontal ceilings through 18 X 18 spacing. Of all the listed residential sprinklers, the LFII pendant requires the lowest flows for sloped ceilings with no three head calculation requirement. It is expected that the required flows for other sprinklers will be revised over time. Data sheets must be carefully reviewed.

CSFM Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board:

The Title 19/NFPA 25 sub-committee continues to make progress. There is a new Chair for the Advisory Board and a recommitment by the CSFM to support the Board’s mission.

Flow testing and Runoff to Storm Drainage:

The nine different regional boards that make up the State Water Resources Control Board are responsible for establishing discharge criteria within each specific region and working with local authorities to create appropriate pollution prevention programs. The specific approaches within each region may not be identical. We will continue to gather additional information regarding this issue. Information regarding the State Board and the regional boards may be located at:www.swreb.ca.gov.

Water Meter Standby Charges:

Steve Hart will be assisting with a study to analyze water meter installation costs and standby fees as they relate to sprinkler systems. This study should take approximately one year.

Roundtable: A question was raised as to whether or not fire dampers or HVAC units would have to be closed/shut down upon activation of a sprinkler water flow switch. Consensus is that HVAC units and dampers must be shut down or closed by the activation of a properly located smoke detector and not a water flow switch.

Respectfully submitted,

George Blind, Co-chair
