1. UPC Chapter 15: Ira Schumer informed the committee regarding the new chapter 15 in the 2000 Uniform Plumbing Code. This chapter includes requirements for firestop protection of DWV and stormwater penetrations of fire rated assemblies. This chapter will not be adopted by CBSC; however, OSHPD and the SFM may adopt it for certain applications.
2. Attendees reviewed the status of the current goals and objectives of the Committee:
Elevator regulations: An ANSI A17.1 task group has been formed to do a risk analysis of regarding sprinkler protection and elevator equipment. A report is due out in the first quarter 2002. Further Committee action will be taken after the report is generated.
Maintenance and servicing of Class II standpipes: The reconstituted CSFM Sprinkler Advisory Committee will be making recommendations concerning Title 19 and NFPA 25. Since the major issue relating to standpipes is the conflict between State regulations and NFPA standards, we will let the Advisory Committee take the lead to address the issues. We will monitor progress and make recommendations.
Fire Alarm Plan Review Guide: Robert Evans (Stockton Fire) volunteered to help coordinate a review of the Guide to ensure that it is as comprehensive as we would like it to be. The Guide is posted in the fire prevention section of the Stockton website at www.stocktongov.com/fire. Committee members are urged to check the Guide as you review fire alarm drawings to see if any changes would be appropriate. We will leave this issue open for the next few months to collect input.
3. Tyco/Central sprinkler replacement: Terri Leyton gave a status report. The CSFM has issued an updated Information Bulletin that includes a recommendation for dealing with the issue at the time of a 5 year sprinkler system certification inspection. See Terri’s message (dated 10/1/01) under Exchange of Ideas or the CSFM website at http://osfm.fire.ca.gov.
Respectfully submitted,
George Blind Co-chair
