NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRE PREVENTION OFFICER’S

FIRE INVESTIGATION COMMITTEE

June 24, 2005 – Palo Alto

In Attendance:

Richard Carpenter -Contra Costa County Fire Protection District

Vern Canon -Nevada County Consolidated Fire District

General Discussion:

Due to the limited attendance at the committee meeting, the co-chair of the Fire Service Education Committee and I met to discuss the educational needs of the fire service in the area of fire investigation.

There is a significant interest in having wildland fire investigation training prior to or during the large wildland firefighting training drill held in the bay area each year. This would likely be a one to two day class that would involve both classroom and field activities. The annual training burns 500 to 700 acres and is usually held towards the end of June each year.

We will be looking at providing the basic Fire Investigation 1-A, 1-B, 2-A, and 2-B classes or ensure that if any of these classes are already being offered that the information gets out to interested individuals.

There is also a need for classes in NFPA-921. We will be contacting CCAI along with NFPA to see what classes may be available and explore the opportunity for co-sponsoring the class.

Work is continuing on developing a list serve for fire investigators.

Respectfully Submitted,

Vern Canon
