Joint Meeting: Building Standards & Fire Code Committees

September 23, 2005

Petaluma

Members Present:

Please see the minutes of the Building Standards Committee for the roster of members present.

The following topics were discusses at our monthly meeting:

  1. There was a discussion of the R-2 Guide under development by the Building Standards Committee. The discussion included problems members have been having with Community Care Licensing.
  2. Similarly, there was a discussion of the State Fire Marshal’s code adoption "Workgroups". At the north kick-off meeting, Chief Grijalva emphasized the "Holistic" approach he is taking regarding the work to be done. He also mentioned that he wants to be more involved in the ICC code adoption process. In the long-term, this means that he will not look kindly on proposed California code changes unless the originator of the change attempted to go through the ICC model code change process first. Therefore, if you want to propose a code change, but can’t go to the hearings, the member should take advantage of their committee members, and propose the change through the respective committees.
  3. There was a discussion of the ICC code change process vs. the old ICBO process. It was mentioned that with the ICC process it is more difficult to overturn committee action since it requires a 2/3 vote by the membership.
  4. The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

Scott D. Alber, P.E.

Co-chair, Fire Code Committee
