| FLAMMABLE FINISHES
The Committee reviewed sections of the 1997 UFC Flammable Finishes Article
45, Section 4502.6.4. This says that spray operations shall not be of a
continuous nature. The word "continuous" was discussed as to its meaning
and intent. Steve Forster will attempt to find an official interpretation.
We discussed ventilation outside of spray booths where limited spray
operations are permitted to see how they compare to ventilation requirements
for flammable liquid storage areas covered by Article 79. Limited spray
areas or touch up areas will be considered H-4 occupancies according to
the 1997 UFC applications manual. Angela Sullivan has conducted research
and will share the information at the min-month meeting |

| TOXIC GAS STORAGE (TGO)
The Committee reviewed changes to Article 80, Section 8003.1.3.5.1-01-01-I.C.C.
Toxic gas storage. Janet McCarron would like the NorCal membership
to provide her with incident releases reports of toxic gasses in storage
(with caps on and properly secured). The TGO also requires testing of cylinders
upon arrival. Are fire departments following these procedures? Do you have
records of TGO releases? These questions are triggered by changes to this
Article and concerns of the intent of the language. If the detection system
fails, does the automatic shut down system occur? |

| THREADED PIPE
We reviewed a letter sent to Kent Miller by a large circuit board manufacturer.
The letter stated that this company uses threaded pipe and is experiencing
continuous problems. A suggestion was made to write an exception into the
code to require an initial hydrostatic test at 2.5 times the proposed operating
pressure and retest the piping system every year or every two years. We
may be able to use the testing procedures found in the mechanical code.
We are still gathering information on threaded pipe and its maintenance
problems, and problems with leaks. If you have information, please contact
Kent Miller at Kent4838@earthlink.net
or call 209-937-8271. |
