Committee members reported on projects assigned to them.

Janet McCarron and Dr. Lew Schalit will complete their comparison of Article 63 and NFPA 1, Chapter 23, Mechanical Refrigeration, and Article 75 and NFPA 50B, Cryogenic Fluids by October 15, 2000.

Committee members are collecting data on the use of Alternate Means and Methods, relating to Articles 79 and 80 of the Uniform Fire Code. This could eventually lead to modification of existing codes or deletion of antiquated codes. We hope to post a questionnaire on the Nor-Cal web site. Responses by Nor-Cal members and other visitors to the site will be very useful to us.

Dr. Lew Schalit suggested a web page be established to provide information and NFPA numbers for new chemicals. Lew will create a sample sheet for committee members to review.

Angela Sullivan suggested the committee members collect data on the number of jurisdictions that are testing ventilation system airflow for spray painting operations. We need to know what test method is being used and whether they are testing airflow. Dr. Lew Schalit and Dr. Gilbert Bendix will check with American Society for Testing and Materials and other organizations to determine what test standards exist for spray operations.

Janet McCarron and Kent Miller will attend the code meetings in Sparks, Nevada on October 23 and 24, 2000. A challenge to toxic and highly toxic gas code changes was submitted in August. If you have information to share or other concerns, please contact Kent Miller at (209) 937-8677.

The Hazardous Materials Committee is planning to become more proactive. Join us in shaping future code standards.
