June 2003 General Membership Meeting

June 11, 2003

President Penni Overstreet-Murphy called the meeting to order 1000 and Bruce Kerl led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Greeting From Host Agency/City: Carlsbad Division Chief Watson welcomed the Association.

Visiting Chiefs and Building Officials Recognition: Chief Teran of LBFD, Chief Jee from LA County F.D., Chief Jim Kross LA County F.D., Chief Austin of Anaheim F.D.

Past Presidents Recognition: Sam Husoe, Tom Oakes, Bruce Kerl, Sherry Benge, and Ted Wackerman

Special Recognition: Sherry Benge, retiring from Anaheim after 25 years of service was presented with a plaque. Chief Austin of the Anaheim Fire Dept. recognized the work of the FPO’s as the first responder’s for their dedication as well as Ms. Benge for her years of service of effort.

Sam Husoe declared a quorum at 1015 and initiated self-introductions.

May Meeting Minutes – There are problems with the website which are being addressed. Minutes will be emailed. Coming soon: www.socafpo.org.

Upcoming Meetings. The next meeting is July 9 at the City of Brea.

  1. Treasurer – Kevin reported $15,300 in the bank. Membership invoices will be sent next month. Membership applications available on the website.

  3. Judge Advocate – announced appointment of John Haberek of LA County to represent the South on the FPO Legislative Committee
  4. Fire Service Education – no report
  5. Public Education- Penni Overstreet-Murphy last meeting topic was Juvenile Firesetters in La Habra Heights. Next meeting in the City of Colton .
  6. Equipment and Devices: no report
  1. Fire Code Committee. Ken Krause of LA City reported that both co-chairs were in Sacramento at the Code Change Committee meeting hearing the State agencies present positions on which code set (NFPA or ICC) they prefer. LATE ENTRY – OSHPD, DSA, HCD went with ICC; SFM went with NFPA.
  2. Building Standards Subcommittee. No Report

Next important meetings in Sacramento are June 26th Coordinating Council Committee and July 16th Building Standards Commission.

  1. ICC – Kevin Scott: Development of the International Fire Code Committee. Also the International Code Council Hearings in Nashville Tenn.
  2. OSFM/CDF – Sandy Masten

    · Chief Tenant to take recommendation to the Code Change Committee

    · NFPA 101 used in the institutions of the state.

    · OSFM will have more representation at the local level.

    · SB 1896 Ch Tennant acknowledges Captain John Haberek for a job

    well done.

  3. CAAFA - Rob Dalton, Past President, Apprenticeship programs available.
  4. NFSA - Sam Husoe, H.R 1824 IRS bill on sprinklers to be a 5 year write off. Look at your hand out and voice your position. July in San Bernardino

    all are invited (AHJ) to participate and become a member.

  5. LAAFMA- Ken Krause LAAFC positions is to speak with one voice.
  6. South Bay FPO- Brad Dotts Long Beach F.D. July 3rd Adult Day Care presentation.

Ratios 1 to 16 amended to 1-8.
